Top 10, Must-See Sessions at Affiliate Summit East 2012 PLUS Special Bonus Photo!

Folks that know me know that visiting New York for business is simply an excuse to explore museums and seek out new restaurants. This year music and farming have entered the mix. Farming because farms have sprouted on New York hotel rooftops since I last visited (appealing since I have become personally invested in the local food movement). And music because Affiliate Summit added two serious parties two their itinerary including a 70s Disco Party and an event hosted by Ice-T and Coco with Beastie Boy Mix Master Mike performing. Both are going to be amazing.

So before you brush up your dance moves, here is my pick for the top ten sessions you can’t afford to miss at Affiliate Summit East 2012:

1. Affiliate Compliance – Best Practices, Issues and Options
Tuesday, August 14
Session 8a
Location: Gramercy Suite
Time: 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Blackhats are getting craftier, more technologically savvy, and bolder. Kellie Stevens recently showed one affiliate using the merchant’s own site to commit fraud. And Brand Verity, whose toolset is a valuable asset to merchants, recently exposed coupon hijacks blackhat affiliates were using. As a merchant, if you don’t want to lose your shirt in the affiliate channel, you have to take the time to educate yourself and develop rock solid compliance policies and tactics. I can think of no better panel to help point you in the right direction. Don’t worry; it won’t be dry. The fact that the ever-opinionated Pat Grady is featured on the panel guarantees it.

2. Google’s Changes – What Matters and What Doesn’t
Monday, August 13
Session 5a
Location: Gramercy Suite
Time: 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

The one-two punch of Google Panda and Penguin really hurt a lot of affiliates who had built out content networks based on old methods. Many affiliates are still reeling from those changes and looking for answers about how to get their businesses back on track. Few understand Google’s shifting machinations better than Wil Reynolds. This session is a must for all affiliates.

Speaker for the Google’s Changes – What Matters and What Doesn’t session:

3. Understanding the Real Value of Affiliate Efforts
Sunday, August 12
Session 3c
Location: Sutton (Beekman & North)
Time: 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.

Google Affiliate Network’s recent fiasco with tracking in the Safari browser served as a clear reminder of how important tracking and attribution is in the affiliate industry. Spectacular missteps like that aside, attribution can be a day-to-day challenge for even the most technically savvy merchants. Oftentimes merchants will not properly attribute sales to the affiliate channel. Or attribute sales to the wrong affiliate. Or inadvertently allow for cross-channel cannibalization of their marketing efforts. This panel is particularly well suited for discussing these challenges.

4. FTC Issues in an ERSP Advertising Challenge
Monday, August 13
Session 6b
Location: Murray Hill Suite
Time: 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.

A mock battle between the the Electronic Retailing Self-Regulation Program (ERSP) and the FTC practitioner will no doubt echo real regulatory issues in the news. In a shifting legal landscape, this one stands out as an important session for advertisers and merchants.

Panelists for the FTC Issues in an ERSP Advertising Challenge session:

5. Affiliate Program Interactivity and Attribution
Monday, August 13
Session 7c
Location: Sutton (Beekman & North)
Time: 3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
Mike Nunez has the unenviable task of being the only solo presenter during a time slot that features the heads of several of the major affiliate networks AND two of the most popular recurring sessions in Affiliate Summit history (Ask the SEOs and Affiliate Improv). In part, that is why he gets the vote here. But the real reason is proper attribution, as I mentioned earlier, is a huge concern. Mike and his team have been working on some new methods to help provide clarity on attribution. If he is revealing them here, it will be well worth merchant’s and advertiser’s time.

6. Flogs, Farticles, Facebook, Fraud, FTC, oh F%*!
Tuesday, August 14
Session 9c
Location: Sutton (Beekman & North)
Time: 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.

As a merchant, if you think just one session will cover everything you need to know about the ever changing FTC landscape, you’re wrong. That’s why I have included two. Plus the title is just great.

7. Keynote Panel Highlighting the Roles, Issues, and Challenges of Women in Affiliate Marketing
Sunday, August 12
Location: Gramercy Suite
Time: 5:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m.

With the time slot of this panel, it could be easily missed if you’re in a hurry to don your disco attire. Don’t be. You will have plenty of time. Women’s roles in the affiliate industry are ever expanding. Kerri Pollard, President of Commission Junction, is just one example of a successful woman in the industry holding the reins of the industry’s largest affiliate network for several years. For this session, the dynamic duo of Affiliate Summit Co-Founder the fabulous Missy Ward and legendary potty-mouth and SEO extraordinaire Rae Hoffman-Dolan will guarantee a fun, informative session for affiliates. I wish emcee Daniel Clark luck  directing this crew.

8. Affiliate Marketing with Online Video
Sunday, August 12
Session 2b
Location: Murray Hill Suite
Time: 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m.

The growing trend of big-money talent experimenting with web video, like Tom Hanks’s Electric City or the popular Funny or Die, is a clear indicator of video’s growing popularity online.  It’s also a great way to incorporate reviews of products in a manner that is both entertaining and easily consumable. As an affiliate, if you’re not starting to incorporate video into your online content then soon you’ll be falling behind.

Speaker for the Affiliate Marketing with Online Video session:

9. Crowdsourcing for Affiliates & Merchants
Sunday, August 12
Location: Gramercy Suite
Time: 3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.

Crowdsourcing is a great content generation tactic. 99 Designs is a recognized leader in the space and a great resource for any business looking to add some oomph to its next campaign. If you feel stuck or don’t feel like you have enough resources at your disposal, this session is well worth your time.

10. Monetize Your Blog Using Affiliate Marketing Training Course
Saturday, August 11
Location: Murray Hill Suite
Time: 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Finally, if you’re in on Saturday and a blogger, this extended special session is well worth skipping out on the city sights for.
